Our Music Education | Zoltan Kodaly

The aim of the Berwick Youth Choir is to develop in children and young people an appreciation of the many genres of music, an understanding of music literacy, and the capacity to sing to enhance self expression and entertain the public.

The teaching programme at BYC is a rigorous one. Whilst all the children are taught to sing, they are also taught music literacy, which gives them a much deeper and long-lasting appreciation of music.

Teaching involves both small group work with our music tutors and large group ensembles with our conductors. As they pass through the three levels of the choir they learn to read music, understand and interpret music and to sing in both unison and in parts. They are taught correct vocal technique and performance etiquette and are exposed to music from a vast array of countries, composers and eras.

The choir sings a diverse range of music: International; Australian; sacred music of many varied religions; contemporary and traditional music. We are especially committed to the new works of some of our marvellous contemporary Australian composers.

No child is excluded from our choir because of lack of funds or of musical ability. We welcome children with disabilities and have had several choristers with a wide range of disabilities over the last 20 years.
